About College House

New Zealand’s First University College

College House is the oldest and most traditional university college in New Zealand. Founded as part of Christ’s College in 1850, College House has evolved into an independent hall of residence at the University of Canterbury.

College House is home to 152 students. The College aims to accept an equal number of men and women and takes students from all faculties. The small number of students makes it possible for everyone to get to know each other and helps foster a strong community spirit.

College House is known for hard work, good fun and strong friendships. The College offers academic support through its staff members, senior students and tutorial system. There are countless opportunities to participate in a whole range of activities. Music, culture and sports are all strong. College House parties and social events are unmatched. Almost all students return for a second year and play a major part in organising the various events and activities.

College House stands for the fact that a college can be much more than a hall of residence. We provide high quality accommodation and meals. But it is the sense of community that makes College House distinctive. There are some experiences people remember for the rest of their lives. College House is one of them.
